Suitcase

A suitcase is a somewhat flat rectangular-shaped bag with rounded corners, either hard plastic or soft or made of cloth, vinyl or leather that more or less keeps its shape. It has a carrying handle on one side and is used mainly for transporting clothes and other possessions during trips. It opens on hinges like a door.
Suitcases lock with keys or a combination. Originally, suitcases were made of wool or linen.

Most modern suitcases have built-in small wheels enabling them to be pulled along on hard flat surfaces by a fixed or extendable handle or by a retractable or stowable leash. Suitcases are a type of luggage.

A smaller, firmer suitcase, used mainly for transporting papers and office supplies is known as a briefcase.

Airlines attach tags to luggage which is transported as checked luggage. (Such checked luggage is occasionally lost or delayed, a significant worry for travellers.) Due to current security concerns, checked luggage may be inspected and the security staff may confiscate belongings that are prohibited on-board aircraft.

Duffel bag

A duffel bag (or duffle bag), is a large cylindrical bag made of cloth with the closure at the top, often also referred to as a kit bag

The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the thick cloth the bag is made of originated. Nowadays a Duffel Bag typically refers to the specific style of bag, though the phrase may also be used to refer to any large generic holdall or a bag made of thick fabric.

It is often used to carry luggage or sports equipment by people who travel in the outdoors. Duffel bags are often used by sailors, and are sometimes called seabags in this capacity.

Soo Locks

The Sault Locks (usually called the Soo Locks) allow ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks are the busiest in the world, passing an average of 12,000 ships (”boats” in Great Lakes parlance) per year. This is achieved in spite of the locks being closed during the winter months, January through March, when ice shuts down shipping on the Great Lakes. The winter months are used to inspect and maintain the locks.

The locks bypass the rapids of the St. Marys River where the water falls 7 meters (21 feet) from Lake Superior. Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Soo Saint Ma-ree) gives its name to both the Canadian and American cities at the site, in Ontario and Michigan, respectively. The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge between the United States and Canada permits vehicular traffic to pass over the locks.

American locks

The American locks form part of a 1.6 mile (2.6 km) canal formally named the St. Marys Falls Ship Canal. They are owned and maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The first American locks were completed in May 1855.

  • Davis Lock was built in 1914. It is 411 meters (1350 feet) long, 24 meters (80 feet) wide and 7 meters (23.1 feet) deep. The Davis lock is used rather infrequently to lock light freighters, tour boats, and small craft when traffic warrants. SS James A Farrell was the first vessel to lock through.
  • Sabin Lock was built in 1919. It is 1350 feet long, 80 feet wide, and 23.1 feet deep. This lock is decommissioned and no longer used.
  • MacArthur Lock was built in 1943. It is 244 meters (800 feet) long, 24 meters (80 feet) wide and 9 meters (31 feet) deep. This is large enough to handle ocean going vessels that must first pass through the smaller locks in the Welland Canal. First vessel through was the SS Carl D. Bradley.
  • Poe Lock was re-built in 1968, after the Saint Lawrence Seaway had opened. It is 366 meters (1200 feet) long, 34 meters (110 feet) wide and 10 meters (32 feet) deep. It can take ships carrying 72,000 tons of cargo. The Poe is the only lock that can handle the large lakers used on the upper lakes.

There is a project, as yet unfunded, to built a new large lock to replace the Davis and Sabin locks.

Engineers Day

On the last Friday of every June, the public is allowed behind the security fence and cross the lock gates of the American Locks for the annual Engineers Day Open House.[1] Visitors are able to get close enough to the ships passing through the two operating locks to touch them.

Canadian locks

Canadian lock, the only lock on the Ontario side, was built in 1895. It broke down in 1987 and a new lock was built within the old lock. The lock was reopened in 1998 and is used for recreation and tour boats. It is 76 meters long, 16 meters wide and 3 meters deep.

The Sault locks are a well developed tourist site that offers viewing stands to watch the locks at work and tour boat trips through the locks. It is now designated a National Historic Site of Canada (see: Sault Ste. Marie Canal).

Chicago Lock

Chicago Lock Co. is a lock manufacturer. Since 1933, it has sold a tubular lock marketed under the registered trademark “Ace.” Millions of Ace locks have been sold; for instance, these locks are used in Northwestern Corporation’s Triple Play bulk vending machine.

Chicago Lock was acquired in November 1999 by CompX.

Electronic lock

An electronic lock (also known as a digital lock) is a locking device which uses some form of electronics to authenticate those accessing it, sometimes using two-factor authentication. Electronic locks are typically considered more secure than conventional mechanical locks and can include additional features like logging access attempts, group level access, time-based access and the incorporation of burglar or fire alarms.

Operation

Most electronic locks use a magnetic lock/solenoid bolt to perform the physical component of locking. Older mechanisms can also be found which use electric motors to move a deadbolt. Once the authentication process is successful, the lock is released into opening.

As providing electrical current to a lock within a door can be difficult, a common solution is an electronic strike plate. Using a normal mechanical lock, an electronic striker can also be triggered remotely to free the latch from the door frame.

Authentication methods

Electronic locks offer a variety of means of authentication; those described below are not considered exhaustive.

Numerical codes, passwords and passphrases

Perhaps the most prevalent form of electronic lock is that using a numerical code for authentication; the correct code must be entered in order for the lock to deactivate. Such locks typically provide a keypad, and some feature an audible response to each press. Combination lengths are usually between 4 and 6 digits long.

A variation on this design involves the user entering the correct password or passphrase.

Security tokens

Another means of authenticating users is to require them to scan or “swipe” a security token such as a smart card or similar, or to interact a token with the lock. For example, some locks can access stored credentials on a personal digital assistant using infrared data transfer methods.

Biometrics

As biometrics become more and more prominent as a recognized means of positive identification, their use in security systems increases. Some new electronic locks take advantage of technologies such as fingerprint scanning, retinal scanning and iris scanning, and voiceprint identification to authenticate users.

Salmon Bay

Salmon Bay is that part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal–which passes through the city of Seattle, linking Lake Washington to Puget Sound–that lies west of the Fremont Cut. It is the westernmost section of the canal, and empties into Shilshole Bay, which is part of Puget Sound. Because of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the smaller, western half of the bay is salt water, and the eastern half is fresh water (though not without saline contamination–see Lake Union). Before construction of the Ship Canal, Salmon Bay was entirely salt water.

East of the locks, Salmon Bay is spanned by the Ballard Bridge, a bascule bridge that carries 15th Avenue traffic between Ballard and Interbay. West of the locks, it is spanned by the Salmon Bay Bridge that carries the BNSF Railway railroad tracks.

NSB BM92

NSB BM92 is a Norwegian diesel railway multiple unit manufactured by Duewag. It is used for commuter trains around Trondheim (Trønderbanen), on Meråkerbanen (Nabotåget) and occasionally on Rørosbanen. The train is not equipped with as many amenities as the NSB BM93 which is used on longer services.

A BM92 trainset consists of two carriages. Four of the fourteen sets are equipped with a large luggage room. They were built between 1984 and 1985. On January 4 2000, a BM92 set with luggage room was lost in a fatal collision on Rørosbanen, the Åsta accident, which killed a total of 19 people.

Bahut

A bahut is a portable coffer or chest, with a rounded lid covered in leather, garnished with nails, once used for the transport of clothes or other personal luggage, it was, in short, the original portmanteau. This ancient receptacle, of which mention is made as early as the 14th century — its traditional form is still preserved in many varieties of the travelling trunk — sometimes had its leather covering richly ornamented, and occasionally its interior was divided into compartments; but whatever the details of its construction it was always readily portable. Towards the end of the 17th century the name fell into disuse, and was replaced by coffer, which probably accounts for its misuse by the French romantic writers of the early 19th century. They applied it to almost any antique sideboard, cupboard or wardrobe, and its use became hopelessly confused.

Windsor Locks, Connecticut Tornado

The Windsor Locks, Connecticut tornado struck on October 3 1979. The short-lived, but intense F4 tornado (see Fujita scale) caused 3 deaths, 500 injuries, and - with more than $300 million in property damage along an 11-mile path - ranks as one of the most expensively destructive tornadoes in American history.

The tornado touched down in the town of Poquonock, Connecticut, just north of Hartford, Connecticut in the Connecticut River valley. It traveled north through the town of Windsor Locks, Connecticut before dissipating in the town of Suffield, Connecticut, just south of the Massachusetts state line.

The path of the tornado crossed the northern portion of Bradley International Airport, and many vintage aircraft at the nearby New England Air Museum were damaged or destroyed by the storm.

Coffin lock

Coffin Lock is a slang term for a blind panel connector (also called a Butt-Joint Fastener) often used in performing arts to join together stage decks or scenery in a butt joint or cabinet and lid locks on road cases. These are typically two part connectors (male and female) that draw together and lock. The two most common types are the cam and acceptor (sold under the trade name “Roto-Lock”) and more traditional hook and pin version. These devices generally use an Allen key to operate the locking mechanism via a small diameter hole either through the face or rear of the panel. When locked, the considerable mechanical advantage offered by the cam or hook holds the panels tightly together. Coffin locks can be installed directly into a mortise cut into each panel, for total concealment except for the locking hole, or mounted to the rear of the panels.
